If you pull the shifter toward second before enegaging first, first should be easier to enegage. You don't have to go all the way into second; Just nudge the shifter toward second against the transmissions resistance, then shift into first. See if that helps. When I was taught to drive I was taught that it was always best to nudge second before engaging first when stopped. Try it before you engage first or reverse right after starting the car too. Makes the car much easier to get into gear.

^ came in to say the same thing...

I also shift into second and then first in such situations, its just second nature now.

I didn't know just nudging the shifter into the 2nd gear's resistance area worked -- thanks for the info red_mx5

All you really have to do is push against the resistance until it goes away and the car is *ready* to slip into second. No need to go all the way. With some cars, and my S2000 has been one of them, when it's very cold out it is hard to get second to engage after the first start of the day. If I push toward second and there is too much resistance I'll push against third until the shifter is ready to go into third, then repeat the action in second before shifting into first.

I may have been taught to do things this way because the cars I learned in didn't have synchros for first gear.
