That is just where the spring wore into the retainer by galling.

Whether it is just "worn" or not, clearly there is less titanium there than there was originally, so it must have gone somewhere.

I expect it ended up in the oil filter over time.

if they were custom made, couldn't they be made snap fit so they don't move around and reduce galling.

Thats an important point with Ti retainers. If they are a loose fit, gauling will be a problem. If they are a tight fit they will last much longer with much less gauling. Earl Laskey pointed this out to me when we were discussing my engine build. He said Ti retainers got a bad rap because when people first started using them the quality of the Ti was poor and they were usually fit too loose. With propper fit and the better Ti alloys, they should last 40000 to 50000 miles without any problem. I'll point out once again that Porsche uses them in their cars.
