It can also happen when the top is cold or stiff, it will not go down as far as when it's been out in the sun.
Okay...found the thread with pictures:

Thanks for the thread..... my initial guess was also the latches when it was coming down somehow got in the way and ripped the top.I've put the top down many times with the latches unsecured to the top before....so....

And also a little while ago i saw a thread saying do you latch your top or not and was alot of people that doesn't latch it.
and also my top was malfunctioning when it happened. top didn't want to go down all the way....same as last week but that time i had them latched.

Click on the details section to see more pictures of how a worn elastic strap can cause the top to not fold properly.
Probably a combination of your top not going all the way down and folding awkwardly (again...because of the worn elastic straps) and the latches not being locked are the reason why you now have a hole in your roof.
By the way....I had to replace my elastic straps because mine were worn after only 1 year and 15k miles. I raise and lower my top alot. I replaced it with the product I linked above.

Your top not going all the way down probably has nothing to do with the latches I'm thinking. I think the elastic straps on your soft top are wearing. Here's a product that replaces the thin elastic straps for something meatier:

Thaks everyone
Peace
This just happened to me as well.
Yesterday I put my top down after work as usual, but noticed that the top got stuck about 6 inches from the bottom. Thinking maybe the canvas got folded up weird, I raised it to the half way point, then lowered it again.
I then heard a POP. Raising the top, I see that both latches have undone themselves and were hanging loose. I tried to close the left latch, but noticed that the plastic tab holding the latch in the close position has broken off.
I always close my latches when lowering the roof - so I was surprised to see them dangling when I raised my top. Looking at the rip spots (which are the EXACT same position as ENTHRALLED's pictures, and experimenting with lowering the stop slowly, I am convinced that this is a malfunction.
Here's what happened:
1) Top attempts to lower down.
2) Elastic band is worn so does not pull metal bar down.
3) While metal bar is "too high" as in this picture, top mechanism tries to push the latches through the fabric. Note that the two latches show pressure points in that picture.
4) Latches punch through the fabric. The pressure forces open both latches, and actually breaks the left latch.
I will see my dealer soon to have it fixed under HondaCare extended warranty. I will report back on any news.

HondaCare will cover the replacement of the top under extended warranty. Thank god, because it would have cost over $4k out of my pocket.
I highly recommend those with loose elastic straps to replace it quickly.
