How lame. What does having a hard top have anything to do with towing a trailer.

Here's what you do;

Get a non-u haul truck that'll keep your gear/stuff/etc and rent a car tow system that gets all 4 wheels off the ground. Tow your S like this - http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/attachment...ase-tesla-7.jpg

I've driven a good 1000 miles towing a car like the S with a truck. No problems.

You don't want a uhaul, they are the most dangerous in the nation.

I know, and it's probably better not to.

For the cost of a hitch plus the headaches he can likely get a truck, with car trailer for a little bit more money.

It was just an example of a car trailer in case the OP doesn't know what they are..

And was this weaker engine encased in a ladder truck frame? I know towing has nothing to with HP. I've done plenty of towing in my time. A Subie would not have the tranny, diff, or frame to be to tow anything close to that weight.
