tranny confusion
ok i have read alot of things while searching, and i am know officially confused!
well the problem is the tranny, it grinds everytime i put it into third gear,
however it still goes into gear.
all i hear is a little chrip rite before it falls into gear. (it doesn't pop out)
so is this a grind?
ex. I start from first gear then into second fine, but when i shift into thrid, a loud nosie grinds, rite before it goes in. (the shifter also vibrates when this happens)
recently i have been pausing before cliding it into thrid ( 1st to 2nd and then pause for a second then into third) this helps me avoid the grind.
now:
I keep hearing things about, sinchoz being replace as a option, and then people talking about tranny swaps, also rebuilt trannies.
can anyone tell me what my problem/solution is?

A notchy feeling in 2 and/or 3rd gear is normal on some cars, not on others. My 3rd gear has done it since day one. Here's some things that may help:
Change Fluid: Try changing it to some fresh stuff. This will help. Have the transmission fluid changed when you do an oil change. It doesn't cost much. Stay with Honda MTF fluid, it's as good if not better than most and it keeps your warranty in tact. Many, if not most, who switch to another brand return to Honda MTF.
Shift Pause: A Honda engineer suggests a slight pause when shifting in the first two or three gears. This pause allows the drivetrain to catch up with the ultra high revving engine. Also, the spring will automatically bring the shifter to dead center between 3rd and 4th gear; allowing it to do so works better than trying to force it into gear.
Rev Match: Rev match when shifting, especially when up shifting or downshifting into 3rd. Just give the throttle a good blip while the clutch is in between shifts.
Hand Pressures: Keep shifter pressure to the left guide rail when shifting 1-2. Gates on this tranny is very narrow, and this ensure that you are hitting 2nd gear squarely. When shifting into 3rd putting slight pressure from the right on the shift knob does wonders.
Be patient: As it breaks in, it gets better and better. I'm not saying you'll never have notchy issues again, but it will be much less frequently.
Smoothness Counts: Proper clutch / throttle / gear shift synchronization and coordination counts. Try not to "ram" your shifts but rather pull the shifter "almost" into gear and then hesitate for a split second before "helping" it the rest of the way, especially if you are in the habit of shifting at low RPMS

Mine does it too. Feels like one tooth on the gear catching when I shift. I shift pretty slow and the fluid's less than a week old. I'm kind of surprised. My '98 Civic with an SI tranny and Quaife dif shifts smoother than my S2000.
Going to try some MT-90 as suggested here since it's warm this time of year.
I'd call it a grind though a very mild one. I can get the same thing on the civic tranny when I get it really hot toward the end of a track session.

How you describe a sound or a feel may not be how I would describe it.Before you start putting away money to tear your tranny apart or to buy another one, maybe start with the basics. Flush and change your clutch fluid. Have you ever done this to the car yet?
How do you move the shifter when you go 2 to 3? Do you "cut the corner" (try to make a diagonal shift) or do you make an attempt to actual guide it "UP, to the right an UP again? Cutting the corner on this shift is notorious for making a very notchy shift.
Do you depress the clutch fully? You don't have bunched up carpet under the clutch pedal, do you?
Most who complain of "grinding" 3rd are calling it the wrong turn and many are just simply obsessive about what is considered a normal thing.
I have been driving sticks since before the S600 was born and I am convinced that my car's H pattern is either off slightly in 3rd grear or the muliti-syncros are ever so slightly misaligned in 3rd. I have had to adjust for shifting into 3rd by closely monitoring my shifting style for that one gear since the day I bought the car - five years ago. Changing fluid did help but did not entirely cure it. Only with VERY precise shifting can I overcome my notchy 3rd. Some day I will tear this thing down to see what the cause is and hopefully find a cure.
Mine has done this since day one and it is the most noticible when I try to "cut corners" or when i've taken too long to shift (kept my foot on the clutch too long before shifting) for whatever reason and it lets me know it doesn't like that.
XViper, dont mean to beat a dead horse here but as my car has entered middle age 55,000 It's starting to pop out of 4th gear on its own while I'm driving. Usually does it when car is "cold". I'll leave the house and work my way up to 4th gear, maybe after a min or so it will just fall out of 4th gear on its own. I can be driving along the road at a steady 45 MPH and next thing I know the RPM's rev up and the shift lever has fallen into Neutral on its own. It did it maybe once a year when the car was new but now it may do it 3-4 times a year. When I shifted into 4th when this has happened it was a solid shift that felt like it engaged fully. Any ideas?
PS. MTF changed about 10,000 ago
