The only update (I know of) besides the 04 trans stuff, was a trans oil pump being added, or upgraded. not sure about the timeline, this could have been mid 2000.
The 2000 transmission oil pump (internal) was found to have an issue under some conditions and there was a recall and correction in Europe but I don't know when the change made it to production. Just like the oil bolts, AHM just let it slide so we had no recall (or even a TSB) in North America.

The change to the engine oil pump happened some time after the bolt change so that probably would have been in '03.

Just for convenience

Edit: The thread ends with kind of a cliffhanger. Can anyone bring closure to this?

the oil pump is the least of your worries. Unless your gentle I'd spend a little more and buy a 04+

Right. But I'm in the market for an AP1.

And really, if no one knows, and all anyone knows is that the part number changed, I think it's just that - the part number changed, maybe from a different supplier or whatnot, or cost savings changes were made. I would think if any improvements came out of the change, they would be widely known, like the oil jet bolt changes. I may be assuming too much since I am not in the automotive industry and don't know if they really do this, but it makes sense somewhat.

I don't think Honda changes part numbers for those reasons. Sometimes a single part like a radiator will have two different manufacturers and also two different part numbers. When a part is superseded is usually when a part number changes.

I probably shouldn't even have brought it up, I still think I'm delusional. I wondered if Billman250 had any new info. I really wouldn't worry about it. I have an 03 and I'm pretty sure I got the old oil pump, I'll check\update it if the occasion arises. I think this would only really be an issue if you entering in endurance races and running 7k-8k for hours or something. It looks like Honda just started using the new AP2 oil pumps in some late 03's. If you were to buy an 03 and find out later that you got the new oil pump, I would just look at as a bonus.
BTW It might sound like I'm saying "don't waste your time trying to find out", but that's not the case at all. I myself am interested to know what happened, why, and when. I'm just saying it's definately not a "deal killer" issue since your looking to purchase.
Good Luck

Apparently it is not important to know which oil pump or oil jets you have since the engines are reliable either way. Check out this 167,000 mile Comptech supercharged (for 100,000miles) '00 AP-1 of Modifry and you will see the worry is not worth the bother. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=366954

Yes it is important. I've had an engine that ran flawless for 15k miles have a number 4 cyl failure 1 week after an SC job. Modifry is lucky if he's on the original oil jet bolts.

When the recall came out overseas, they were kinda right about the extra load from high speed sustained driving.

However.....FI was not part of that equation, which can bring on the same load, even more.

Wow....I forgot about that thread. On of my customers has done some first hand research on his 10 second s2k, using this new ENGINE oil pump. Lemme see what he knows. Then I'll bump that old thread.
