Trouble isolating cranking/electrical problem
Ok here's the situation with my S2000...I had trouble finding someone with a similar issue, so I finally decided to post up :
Since I got the car about 2 years go I think it has had these symptoms, but I pretty much thought it was the battery that was just going bad. It was previously my brother's car, and he never abused it or did anything else except for installing of the comptech supercharger kit.
The car : 2000 AP1, Comptech supercharger
How it runs : Runs great!!
How it starts : seems to start a fraction slower than it should, or requires me to hit the button a second time to start on a cold start.
Symptoms :
-Once in a while on a cold start, the car would turn some then sputter and die. I have to hit the ole Start Engine button a second time and it comes right to life.
-I changed the battery probably about a year and a half ago(today the battery tested at Autozone to be still in good shape)...also this is Vegas, so I would not be surprised if it was the battery, but autozone tested it to be in good shape.
-The Alternator was also tested with Autozone's machine. He had me rev to 2k rpm and he found that the alternator was doing it's job as well. (I hear that they can only accurately test the alternator though if you pull it out for a bench test..true?)
-He noticed the engine did turn a bit before it started, which I am used to..it was like that when I got the car, but again, I had written that off previously as a battery problem, or maybe the supercharger being parasitic maybe making the starter work harder to get the car started(just my edumacated guess there)
WHAT HAPPENED
Today, for the second time, the car wouldn't start. I got to work, some co workers told me that I had left my lights on. I got to my car an hour and a half after I went in to the office to turn off the lights, lock the cars with the keychain, and noticed the horn didn't beep its normal beep..quite weak. I was like oh no is the battery dieing? This happened once before, and I jumped the car just fine. Did the same thing today..jumped the car, drove to autozone..tested alternator and battery, then drove home.
Now that I have all this data, I don't know what it is...save for one conclusion
My idea of possible culprits :
alternator - tested out good, but is the test valid?
Starter - ?
Battery - tested out good
wiring somewhere draining the battery(short?) - this is where I think the problem lies..when the car is sitting off..something is draining the battery maybe?
But they were all tested well..save for the starter, that he told me I have to pull and put on the bench in the store to test. But how can that explain the weak battery after the lights were on for only 1.5 hours?
Now I put this in your hands..and maybe we can figure this out...please discuss Smile thanks, this is bugging the hell out of me
