Unsuccessful at self-diagnosing

If you recently changed the clutch and the noise quieted down a little, I would guess the problem is somewhere in the clutch system. Does the sound rise and fall with rpm, or does the sound change with the speed of the car? The metallic rubbing sound could be the throwout riding on the arms of the pressure plate. You could pop off the slave dust boot and take a look inside, possibly was not installed (greased) properly. Just an idea..

I originally thought it was the throwout bearing and thats why I changed the clutch. It never fully went away but seemed to not be as bad for a little while. Me and a buddy did the clutch job ourselves and I made sure to grease everything.
