Default Valve Adjustment

$147 includes the valve adjustment and a synthetic oil change from Todd @ 2nrwerks. I have owned a Celica GTS w/ 50000 miles and a Toyota Matrix XRS w/ 39000 miles and those 2ZZ-JE engines are designed somewhat similar to a Vtech engine and I never heard about valve adjustment. What exactly is the process and is it really necessary? I have an 03 w/ 42000 miles. Thanks in advance.

If you hear the valvetrain ticking, it's because the clearances aren't right. Very serious issue when clearances are wrong. $$$$ damage usually follows. The manual says to have them checked at certain intervals.

they take off your valve cover, and adjust your valve, they adjust them if their too loose or too tight, thats about it.

Not quite. You will always hear a bit of valvetrain noise. That's just the nature of the beast. The trick is to know when it's not normal. If you DON'T hear anything, that's when you need to worry a bit more than if you hear too much. If you don't hear anything, that means the valve lash is too tight and the valve is being pushed down into the cylinger too far (and we all know what can happen then). My 00/01 manual states to do a valve adjustment "only when noisy" or at 7 years/105K miles.
Valves tend to get noisier with use as wear continues. They won't get quieter unless something really weird has happened.

Well I guess if someone is driving 2.5 hours to have his S worked on by 2nrwerks then someone must know a thing or two. Thanks for the replies.

Dude. VTEC.

Everyone all at once. V T E C.

Once more! V-T-E-C

I sure as hell wouldn't have bought this car if VTECH had contributed in any way, shape, or form.

It is good to have you're valves adjusted every 30,000. I do mine at that interval. I have seen check engine lights with multiple missfire codes and it is due to having the valve lash out of spec. Basically I keep mine adjusted so I don't need to worry about MIL.

yah every 30K, have one done. Also, its best to have your valves more on the loose side than tight side. But still they should be done correctly.
