Default VTEC Question

Sorry for the ignorance -and for the benefit of the many newbies on the list- Can anyone explain how does the OHC go into its more aggressive cam lobes -VTEC-?
Does it actually move -the camshaft- slightly in the anterior-posterior direction to get the bigger lobe? How is it that the primary is "chain driven" and the secondary is "geared" as in a racing engine?
Thanks in advance for your patience.
Daniel

All of the cam lobes are gear driven from the same chain, and all of the cam lobes are on the same shaft. When the ECU enables the VTEC solenoid, a pin locks the cam followers in to the bigger VTEC lobe. The cam does not shift.
