Update: It isn't the water pump that was making the noise, although it does sound exactly like it's spraying water out of a small nozzle or something. It was the tensioner pulley's bearing that is going out.
The water pump is making a noise like it is spraying water, but I'm not losing coolant.
At 70k miles, should I need to replace the belt since it may have been stretched out due to the wobbling?
How hard is it to swap the whole water pump? I couldn't find a DIY. I've changed a starter and removed the alternator while doing it, with the help of a friend.
You might try removing the belt and then grab all the pulleys one at a time. Give each a good groping to check for movement. If any one of them allows movement other than spinning on its axis, then the bearings on that shaft are loose. Any significant axial or radial slop in the bearings require replacement. It's usually easier to replace the entire part than to replace the bearings and seals. But if you have a good bearing supply store nearby, it is definitely cheaper to rebuild it yourself. Hope you get it figured out.
My previous car made a similar noise to the one you're describing before it catastrophically destroyed itself doing 80 on the motorway, the head gasket then went 'ka-boom!'.
I hadn't lost any coolant before that either.
I agree with the above, but would replace the waterpump to be on the safe side.
Thanks guys. I will get that water pump replaced. Anyone know how easy or difficult it is to replace? I've removed the alternator to replace a starter with the help of a friend.
