What exactly is the key receiver paired to?
I just bought vader1's s2000 yesterday, and he brought up a good question while we were going over the car. He installed an SOT supercharger kit on the car (which is freaking awesome, by the way) and had swapped out the stock ECU for a Haltech ecu. I was always under the impression that the key was paired to the ECU, but that can't be the case as the original key still works, and vader1 told me he didn't reprogram it. I'd like to get another receiver as a backup, but how do I pair it to the car?
There is a "Keyless entry control unit" in the car. I believe it is located under the drivers knee area behind the dash and has a white (maybe green? I've seen it vary) harness plug/adapter thing on it. Little black box with blue/white labels. Sounds super scientific I know
. I don't think there is a pairing procedure for the control unit itself. I would imagine that part simply plugs in since I think you have to take the dash off to get to it. To pair the key with the new receiver you'd have to follow the steps outlined below.
From what I can find, this is the part number so you can order a backup. 38380-s2a-a01
To program:
Close doors, hood, trunk.
1. Ignition ON.
2. Within 1-4 secs. push lock or unlock while aiming the remote at the receiver.
3. Within 1-4 secs, turn OFF ignition.
4. Within 1-4 secs, turn ON ign.
5. Within 1-4 secs, repeat (2.)
6. Within 1-4 secs, turn OFF ign.
7. Within 4 secs, turn ON ign.
8. Within 1-4 secs, repeat (2.)
9. Within 1-4 secs, turn OFF ign.
10. Within 4 secs, turn ON ign.
11. Within 1-4 secs, repeat (2.)
12. Confirm that you hear the door lock actuators. Within 1-4 secs, push the transmitter lock or unlock button again. The keyless receiver is now in the program mode. You must push the transmitter lock or unlock button of the first transmitter again to program that remote.
13. Within 10 secs, aim the transmitters (up to three) whose codes you want to store at the receiver, and press the transmitter lock or unlock buttons. Confirm that you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators after each transmitter code is stored.
14. Turn ign. OFF, and pull out the key.
15. Confirm the operation of the new codes.
(These instructions were shamelessly ripped of from xviper, and were pulled directly from the Helm manual. Thanks!)

The remote and chip in the key are two different things. Posted above is the remote/keyless entry stuff.
The chip in the key (for the immobilizer) pairs with the ECU. If you swap with an aftermarket ECU, the immobilizer is no longer active, because it is no longer there.
