A knock sensor failure or absence would not cause a VTEC malfunction CODE, but the VTEC effectiveness will be reduced and noticeable.

definitely a knock sensor, I paid 134$ shipped from majestic honda, others claim you can use odyssey or civic knock sensors(40-80$) but also others have stated that those sensors have been tuned to different frequencies. I just replaced mine a few months ago because the damn thing is extremely FRAGILE. It will not cause a vtec malfunction but you risk ruining your motor since knock will not be detected.
