When to check the oil level? Hot or Cold?

I've noticed that mesuring after you just driven it will give a higher reading, must be all that air in the oil causing expansion.

I don't race - just an enthusiast. I drive my 2001 Spa Yellow to work every day and occasionally get it to 7500-8500 RPM. I bought used with 5500 miles. Had the dealer change oil at 7500 and began having apparent oil loss - around 1 quart every 1500-2000 miles. I have been checking oil at gas fillup (warm engine). I added about 3 quarts of oil over a 2 month period and decided to change oil myself. I put in a new filter and Castrol 10W30. I have not had any more apparent oil loss and it's been 1300 miles.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I don't find much of a difference whether I measure the oil hot (after 10 minutes) or the next morning. I think the small amount of oil that drains after 10 minutes is offset by the negative effect of thermal expansion. Given it reads the same, I choose to measure COLD.

If you have enough air in your oil to make the reading higher, you have WAY too much oil in your system. Frothed oil and seized components make great company.
