Default When to get valve adjustment?

Hi

I've been an S2k owner for only a short while... I've done some searching but did not really find what I was looking for.

I have a 2001 S2k with approx. 17k miles.... I keep reading things like people adjusting their valves. Is this a maintenance procedure? When is one supposed to get them adjusted? What does it sound or feel like when its time to have them adjusted?... is it ticking that I'm supposed to be listening for? I have some ticking when I'm driving it hard but I'm still not sure what sounds are "normal" and what sounds are not.

Please be patient to my newness and dont say "WHY DONT U SEARCH!!!". I already searched and did not find an answer. Thanks.

The Helm manual states to adjust the valves at 7 years or 105,000 miles OR when they are noisey. Don't go nuts trying to listen for noise unless you have done something that you ought not to have.

Many of us have found that adjusting the valves soon after break-in (around 10-15k miles) has yielded improvements in smoothness. Plus, many of us that have performed this operation much earlier than recommended by Honda have discovered valves that were slightly out of adjustment specifications.

Here are links to two excellent FAQ threads:
