Default Whine Dependant on speed

Greetings, I have what I think at least may be diff whine? It is completely dependant on speed, happens at all rpms/gears without or without the clutch engaged. Gets louder as speed increases, and seems to be coming from the rear of the center console - so the transmission tunnel. Any advice on fluids to change / parts to inspect to rectify this would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time

Could it be the diff? Mine was re-conditioned before I bought the car.

I just replaced my diff with a used one, and added stiffer mounts and mine whines too. Its been almost 2 months and im considering it normal because if it was really a diff issue I think I would have had it fail by now. Swap the fluid to be safe and look to see if there are any large metal pieces. I use the AMSOIL severe gear 75/90.

It's not the diff. I had the same thing and fixed it about 3 weeks ago. It's a bearing in the transmission case. While I had the case out, I changed the 3 bearings that are accessible while I was in there and two oil seals. Part numbers are at the end of this post. You'll need to remove the shifter from inside the car, then the drive shaft (propeller shaft) to get access to the rear of the transmission and drop it. A manual is extremely helpful in the procedure. The whole thing can be done in about 1.5 hours. You'll need a press to remove and press in one of these bearings I can assist if you have questions.

91005-PCY-003 BEARING, BALL (31X55X13) $14.00

91123-PCY-004 BEARING, TAPER (41X68X20) $26.89

91124-PCY-004 BEARING, TAPER (35X68X19) $26.89

91201-PCY-003 OIL SEAL (40X60X9) $6.03

91301-PCY-003 O-RING (28X2.6) $2.02

I purchased these from hondapartscheap

If you want to confirm before digging in, put the car on the lift with the wheels off the ground and turn the car on and put it in say 2nd. While the wheels are rolling you should hear the whine. If you have a stethoscope, you can pinpoint where it's coming from. My drive shaft and diff were so smooth and quiet. When I put it on the back of the transmission housing, it was clear that was where the awful sound was coming from. If you don't have a stethoscope, you can use a long screwdriver and put your ear on the blunt end as it will transfer the sound just like a stethoscope would.

Please update us with what you found. I was convinced the sound was normal after putting up with it for 3 years. I was ecstatic when it was solved so easily.

It is the bearing in the transmission and this due to low fluid and the bearing heats up and develops Hot spots and starts to whine, at least that's what I think happens. But the good news is that it won't get worse and the trans will function fine.

Yup, transmission whine for sure. I'm still trying to get the courage/ambition to drop mine down and replace the tail shaft assembly with another one I have in the garage. The sounds is more annoying than anything. I'm thinking of just forgetting the whole thing and just swapping to an AP2 transmission.

What transmission fluid are you running? I'm beginning to think that the Honda MTF is contributing to the bearing failure because its so thin. I just don't think its up to the task of track/performance driving.

^^ hmmm you maybe right. I have used nothing but OEM fluid since 0 mileage and now at 184,000 miles and I hear a whining sound from the center console area. Been hearing it for the past 50,000+ miles. It's not as loud but just enough To hear.
What other trans fluid can stand up to abuse?
I may have to switch to something else but it's probably too late...
