How am I meant to put the car in 2nd and then roll the wheels while listening for a noise while it is up on jack stands? It would just stall.

The noise is still present in neutral so is that ok to use?

is it quieter in neutral? and where exactly is the sound coming from? for sure not the diff if the car is not moving and the sound can still be heard. transmission makes sense though. and if the car is in 2nd on jacks I don't think it would stall because there's nothing to move but the rotational mass of the tires and whatnot.

Doesn't seem any quieter in neutral. Also what I mean is if you let the clutch out in 2nd won't the car still stall ? How am I meant to turn the wheels while holding the clutch in

Rear wheels off the ground. Start the engine. Handbrake off. Push in clutch, select second gear, throttle up and release clutch. Rear wheels should now be spinning with the engine idling.

Get under car and listen.

I see...so what keeps the revs from falling and the car stalling while it is jacked up?

Since there is no load on the wheels, then engine won't turn off.

Exactly what he said. I can idle in 4th and it won't stall either. Never had to go higher.
