Default will carbon ap2 synchros go into an ap1 ?

Having trouble getting into 5th gear. and as of right now its pretty much locked and i cannot shift into 5th. ive been trying to search for the solution but ive been reading more and more that the brass synchros in the ap1 can wear out and even "burr". just curious if id be able to swap for the carbon ap2 synchros..

Doubt its your synchros. Try changing your transmission fluid (I suggest synchromesh) and doing this:

Turn car off. Hold clutch down.

From 5th, you will need to try to force it fast into 6th.
once you can get it in 6th, row it from 5 to 6 about 50 times. This could lower the burr and cure it completely.

Solved my problem. You'll be no worse off if it doesn't work. Definitely worth a shot before you drop all the money on a rebuild.

AP1 service parts are carbon coated.

Even if they do it is probably cheaper to buy a used tranny.

Buying a used Ap2 tranny will be significantly cheaper than trying to retrofit the AP2 synchros, IIRC you have to replace nearly all of the gear sets as well and they are insanely expensive that way.

changed the fluid today no metal shavings or pieces came out... even stuck a rod and magnet in there and no flakes or anything. ive been trying this engine off gear change thing alot but no progress. i cannot engage into the gear at all, its just not having it. and your right about the ap1 service parts are all carbon coated.

billman, when your 6th went out, was it like completely closed off or were you able to get it in just a bit?
