PS Our fair city has had it share of hard knocks. There are still a few questionable areas, BUT the downtown waterfront is a nice little place to pass some time.
Cobblestone streets, fishing vessels, the Whaling Museum , two breweries, an ale house, a Portuguese cafe (a favorite spot of mine) fresh seafood.

Lainey, I neglected to say that we did the mansion tours in Newport last trip, so that won't be on our radar this time. Sounds also like MV is going to be swamped. Are there things out on the peninsula worth visiting? Or Providence? Or maybe head south?

We aren't city people, so I can't help too much with Providence. Are you foodies? If so dining on Federal Hill might be of interest.

Or the theater?

Not sure where to head south of us...The peninsula ? As in Cape Cod? I'll leave that one to Bill. That's his stomping grounds.

"Since I posted a couple of times in the 2017 thread about our Paris to Normandy river cruise next July, thought I would start the 2018 version. Never too early to plan!! I planned that cruise through Avalon Waterways. I'm also planning to book flights soon as the calendar allows (one year in advance). I don't like to leave anything to chance. It's a surprise for the +1, who only knows we are going on an Art and Impressionism trip (art historian on board) and the dates, but not the country or that it is a river cruise. I may have to tell him 30 days in advance (due to security clearance requirements), but hoping to just show up at Dulles the day of departure."

I have since booked our plane flights. Getting a bit closer! Here is the description:

Made the final payment for out trip a few days ago. Now choosing the excursions at the various stops along the way. Usually a choice of two at each location.

We just booked our excursions for our Italy cruise in July. Next is to order some Euros in advance and book our dining preferences. We are looking forward to the trip.

I need to make a trip out your guy's way. I will be in Boston for the Needham College Soccer Showcase on Memorial Day weekend, but I'm flying in. Wish I could make Spring Fling, but funds need to be focused on S2KDays.

Would love to see Italy with the +1 and go to his grandfather's little town of Montescaglioso, not too far from Naples. That will probably not be for a few years, though. We do a big (i.e. expensive) trip every other year and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I think the next big one will be the Mississippi river boat cruise. There are quite a few, but the one from and back to NO looks good. Italy would be after that. So many places, so little time!

Just booked the Paris-Normandy cruise excursions to include Monet's gardens at Giverny, all day trip to the Normandy beaches (I have been before but not since I was 11), walking tour through the medieval quarter of Rouen, tour of Napoleon and Josephine's Chateau de Malmaison, and a walking tour of the Ile St Louis and Ile de la Cite in Paris, with a tour of Notre Dame. Still have to plan the other places to see in Paris, but those are not part of the official trip. Getting the +1's input, since he has never been and I've lived there and been back a couple of times since.

^ Also booked a hotel for our night of arrival in Paris...can't beat the location. Right next to the Eiffel Tower! It is subject to change by Avalon, but I hope we end up there. It is also close to the dock where we catch the cruise boat the following afternoon.

Found a hop on/off tour bus in Paris which will work out well for our sightseeing. The +1's priorities are the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre (Sacre-Coeur) and Notre Dame, but he's never been so is not familiar with the many, many other sights. Here is the list I'm working from. Now I have to weed some out. Gonna be hard, but necessary! One that is not on the list is the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. I'm very sorry we won't be able to go there. It is fascinating - among the famous people buried there are Oscar Wilde, Chopin, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison (The Doors), Marcel Proust, Moliere, Isadora Duncan, and Rossini.

Musee d’Orsay
Musee Rodin
Palais-Royal Gardens
Fondation Louis Vuitton
Luxembourg Gardens
Ile St-Louis
Bateau Mouche
Musee Picasso
The Louvre
Notre-Dame
Rue Saint-Honore
Marche Aux Puces de Saint-Ouen
The Eiffel Tower
The Marais
Rue des Martyrs
Basilique du Sacre-Coeur
Avenue des Champs-Elysees
