That's why i'm trying to do some research, Gene Our current ancient HP uses the HP15 black cartridge and a single color cartridge....whereas i see that some newer ones (Canon?) sell you individual color cartridges....at least 3 of 'em

Jerry, the kodak will cost you less in ink. If you print primarily documents one of those may be your best choice. And a canon will satisfy your desire for an excellent print. I use a canon here for my printing needs.

Epson also makes an excellent photo printer.

I Have 2 canon printers I use regularly

One is a canon mp470 for documents. It is also a capable printer for photos and it is a scanner also. Overall it is a great printer and uses only 2 cartridges one for black and one for color.

For my photo printing I have the older model Canon Pixma Pro 9500. It produces professional prints up to 13 x 19 very quickly. Its the perfect addition to my digital darkroom.

Also as stated above you can get non-oem ink but YMMV some cartridges will harm your printhead and/or the colors produced while printing will not be WYSIWYG. WYSIWYG is critical for me when I am producing prints from my calibrated monitor it may not be an issue for you.

Dave

WYSIWYG= what you see is what you get.

thanks for all the info and links, but the "review comments" for the MP470 all seem to point to an Ink Cartridge "hog" as primary complaint....

it would be nice to hear from someone with a Kodak Printer. maybe TripleH uses one, but he's too busy with our Sporting Roadster Tour...departing in a couple weeks

thanks for explaining "wysiwyg" but what about "YMMV"

Found this comparison of INK usage by a google search.

Might be slanted but purports to test a whole bunch of printers (including some mentioned on this thread) for a typical annual printing of b/w, combination and all-color media.

I have the Dell 924 All In One. It does not feed envelopes very well and I have not been happy with photo quality. Some of the HP printers that we have had did much better on photos, but the HP ink is very sensitive to water. The slightest bit of moisture leaves spots or smears.

I refill my cartridges. We don't do that much printing. The printer is cheap, the owner is cheap, and so are the copies. The key always is to refill while still half full.

I have an HP that I paid just around $100.00 for. I'd have to look at the model number. It copies and scans as well, does not fax, but you can scan a document and fax it from the Windows Fax program.

I think the cartridges are around $20.00 for B&W a tad more for color, but I could be off by a few bucks... I think there is a slot for the memory card should you wish to print pictures, but I've never bothered. I go to the local CVS/Walgreen's when I want to print pics. That happens less often these days.

I've had it a few years with no issues. I'd bet it's no longer available and the more recent model is probably available cheaper.

Unfortunately, printers are now "disposable" items.
