3-IN-1 Printers....
Jerry, whichever printer you get, make sure that it works not only with your current OS, but also any OS you may upgrade to in the future. A couple of years ago I bought an HP OfficeJet 6310 All In One printer/copier/scanner/fax. It workd perfectly under Windows XP, but when I upgraded to Vista, I lost the ability to scan, fax or copy from my computer. I can manually fax and copy, but if I need to scan anything, I have to do it from my wife's laptop. It's a pain in the butt.
The +1 just got a new 3-in-1 printer - it's the Canon PIXMA MX330. It was one of two best reviewed by reviewers and users. The other was the Epson Stylus NX515 (which I think is wireless). It prints great in color. It was on sale at Best Buy for $69, down from $99. It has two cartridges - one black and one color. The black sells for $15 and the color for $25. They obviously make their money in cartridges. I think we will be very satisfied with this printer.
In a nut shell there is no such thing as an ink jet printer that is inexpensive as far as the cost per copy is concern. Some are just less expensive than others. The reality is that ink jet technology is not as cost effective as LASER technology in the long run. It really boils down to how many images one lays down. If that number is low than an ink jet printer along with purchasing cartridges over the Internet can be cost effective. If that number is thousands of pages per month then a LASER printer is less expensive in the long run.
That is my two cents.

I've always avoided multi function units.
The bottom line is they never function as well as the individual units.
I'd rather pay up front and be satisfied with each of the units.
When it comes time to upgrade, I'll upgrade the individual peice that needs it.

I haven't pulled the trigger on a new printer, but the one that you bought sounds interesting. My old HP 342c has only black and color cartridges....has worked for me for a long time. I'm not at all enthused about the little tiny color cartridges that seem to now go with the HP AIO printers....
Most of our printing is b/w, unless we occasionally want to print out a color flyer or 4x6 photo. Does this model work with that size photo paper?
As Matt said, there are probably generic cartridges for 2/3 of the unit cost....
Staples has a CyberSale in effect today, so I headed out there at 9 am and we now own a HP Photosmart Premium All-On-One/ Wireless. It's got a large touch screen to preview pics and select the modes: print, copy and scan. The "user reviews" were almost all positive.
List price about $200 bucks and I got it at 50% off
I've been happy with my old HP and am hoping for the same reliability on this new one
If anyone else is looking for an item like this, you might still find one at a local Staples. The website says "sold out" but I found one at a store a few miles farther than our local store (which was also "sold out")
