I thought airplane gauges were designed so that "3 o'clock" or "pointing right" was "all is right."

I don't see it here though:


That's a Cessna 182 gauge panel.

Gosh Barry, you beat me to it. Whose Skylane?
Lets see, turn and bank (lower left) the "plane" is usually level, or not too far off, same for the attitude indicator (upper middle). Airspeed indicator @ cruise speed is going to be pointing roughly "down", Directional gyro by definition is pointing "up" Verticle speed indicator is pointing "left" (9:00) in straight and level flight, and the VOR dials (righthand side of the cluster, upper two- are normally pointing straight up and down when tracking a radial.

I've been flying the Microsoft 182 since November, 1982.

However, I found this photo on a google search.
I have atwo foot x three foot poster of the full panel display hanging in my dining room over our family desktop.
