Default Auto-registration

I know Wisconsin has some of the lowest vehicle registrations in the U.S. I know Minnesota is totally different, I just wondered what it was like in the rest of the country.

Wisconsin. $55 a year for a car/suv. Light truck is $77.50 a year (3/4 ton, 1 ton are marginally more). Personalized plates $15 a year, reoccuring.

Not sure of the specifics for Minnesota, but it is based on vehicle value (yike). I knew the father of a college friend was paying like $600 a year back in the late 80s/early 90s for his new luxury car and I was like HOLY CRAP!!! That was when it was $35 a year here.

We keep changing in Massachusetts. If you have a specialty plate, it $81 for 2 years. You own the plate forever or untill you turn it in, regardless of the car it "registers." Recular plates cost about $55 for 2 or 4 years, last time I renewwed. When I got my plate, it was for one plate on the back of the car. Much as I'd like something to math the S, that would mean a front plate breaking up the line. Motorcycles are $25 a year.
A few years ago, you got a $5 discount using hte mail or hte internet. When Twitt Romney came in, he added the $5 surcharge to renew inperson to all renewals. This was part of his fees are not taxes program.

Connnecticut is neglible as well, like $60 every two years I think.

BUT, we have property tax on our cars. My 2 y/o TSX cost me about $475 for the year, and I live on the POOR (Mystic) side of the state. Someone in S2000 talk from Fairfield (wealthiest CT county) said his car was taxed at almost $1k.

I'd have to go out to my car and pull out the registration to see what we paid this year. Don't want to. But I can tell you it's around $300. The personalized plate I have with the costs $50 the initial year and $40 every year, in addition to the other fees based on the car's value.

Andy pays about $1,400 for some of his work trucks' registrations. California is a rip-off! And it used to be worse! When the Terminator took office he made sure we all got a little rebate and got the registration fees lowered.

CA can be expensive. There's a flat $40 annual fee from the state. Counties and special districts can add more on top of that. Then there's a "license fee" that is based on the purchase price. That can be pretty big the first few years you have the car, but it falls quickly. The license fee on my S is down to $110/yr. I have a 98 1/2 ton pickup that's down to $48.

If you have a truck there is also a weight fee. They really get you with that one because it never goes down. The weight fee on my truck is $154/yr.

$35 a year for regular passenger vehicle, $10 more for vehicle that weighs over 3500 pounds. $10 extra for personalized plates annually.

However, we have to pay local personal property taxes on each car (which I'm reallllly dreading on the new one). If memory serves, the rate is $3.00 for each thousand dollars of value of the vehicle.

In Texas cars are about $75, by weight, and farm vehicles almost go for free. It is a major pain in Texas to get a personal plate. You have to make a trip or two down to the DPS headquarters, fill out reams of papers and pay your $40 fee. But then you have to repeat the process every year in order to keep your plate.

In Colorado registration for newer vehicles can be between $600 - $700. Farm vehicles and older vehicles cost very little to register.

Last experience with vanity plates in TX was to send a form to Austin with 3 choices and a check. You keep the plate forever as long as you pay the upcharge. No additional versus a regular plate.
