However, we have to pay local personal property taxes on each car (which I'm reallllly dreading on the new one). If memory serves, the rate is $3.00 for each thousand dollars of value of the vehicle.
So when you pay "property tax" on the vehicle, I assume that means you don't pay sales tax on it, right? We pay state (5%) and optional county tax (.5%) on the sale cost, even for used cars (the bastards). And of course they tax rebates, and all other savings even though you don't pay them!!!

Quite the diversity state to state. Thanks for the info.

We still pay a state sales tax (can't remember specifically, but I think its 3%) when we purchase the car. Afterward there is a LOCAL (charged by my city) personal property tax that is paid annually in decreasing (according to the drop in value) amounts every year. When a new car is purchased or an old one is sold, we are required to register the car with the locality within 30 days. Then a bill is sent and we pay the personal property tax based on the value of the vehicle. The personal property tax paid to the City is deductible on state and federal income tax returns. I suspect the personal property tax for my new S will probably be in the $1000 range.

Here in Florida it costs us a total of $130 to register the S and the CR-V (both MY04), and we have specialty plates for funding the protection of manatees. There is no separate property tax for our vehicles or any inspections.
Registration renewal is done through the mail here, so we don't have to deal directly with the DMV either.

Our registrations are $41.00 for two years. But we also have excise tax of $25.00/$1000.00 on our cars as well. If you don't pay your excise tax, no registration renewal for you.

Here in NY we pay based on weight of vehicle. The S2000 is $46.00 per year, no income tax on value. We do pay sales tax of 8.5% when the car is first registered.

This is the registration fee breakdown for my 1998 Odyssey van, that is also due in November.

FEES
Registration Fee $40
License Fee $32
Weight Fee $0
Speical Plate Fee $30
County/District Fees $10
Owner Responsiblity Fee $0

TOTAL $112

I have no idea what an Owner Responsibility Fee is. Only in California.

Taxa-ohio is cheaper than I thought. Annual registration is $42 for a car and $34 for a motorcycle, including local tax and Registrar fees. Those are up $ 10 bucks each from 2 years ago. Sales tax of 6% when you buy, but trade-ins prices are deducted from taxable. No excise or personal property taxes. Military vanity plate is free permanently.
