Why in the everloving world would ANYONE want to store the contents of their hard drive on Google's servers? Even as a disk backup, that's about as stupid an approach as I can imagine.

I like Google, I use the search pages all the time and GoogleEarth is extremely cool (although it sure would be nice to have high-rez coverage everywhere).

But giving them the contents of your hard drive? C'mon! HPH

What exactly is needed to keep personal information off the web? All I see is a box to check that says "Encrypt Google Desktop index and data files".

Is this the magic box that protects privacy?

I don't use Google, for some reason and I don't know why. Maybe I see them as too intrusive.

I'm a pretty sorry computer user so don't take my word for this.

The Google Desktop is a different thing than just querying from the Google site. It's like a personalized Google page where you can store personal info. You would have to install it on your computer.

About Google desktop

One scenerio that you might want to use "search across computers" would be in your own home if your computers weren't networked. You could search the living room computer from the den computer for a file you need. In doing so though, Google stores your computer's info on their servers.

Since I'm a sorry computer user, I have no need for Google Desktop.

I used to be a sorry computer user, but then I got rid of my Pentium system and upgraded to a Mac ( ). Of course, then I was the one who was sorry ( ), not my computer, so I switched back. But then I decided to forego Linux and switch to Windows, and I became a sorry user ( ). (Sorry!)

My (80-year-old) parents finally got broadband and, in the process, a router for their home computers. Gave them quite a few adventures on installation, but it's up and running now, and the home network includes a Win98 system that my Mother refuses to give up on. If they can do it anyone can. HPH
