Just as something to pique your curiosity, it's listed in the 2018 real estate assessment as a residential property and assessed at $1,554,011. Here's the description from the RE assessment:
Year Built: 1780
Construction Quality: GOOD PLUS
Building Condition: VERY GOOD
HVAC: RADIATOR W/AC
Building Type: 2½ STORY
Ext. Wall Construction: MASONRY COMMON BRICK
Above Grade Living Area (Sq. Ft.): 3,226
Total Basement Area (Sq. Ft.): 640
Finished Basement Area (Sq. Ft.): 0
Full Baths: 4
Half Baths: 1
Fireplace Description: Double 2 Story - Good
FP Units: 2
There's no way to tell what it was before 1942 because the real estate records that far back aren't on line. Here's what listed by the conservation group:
"Built in 1803, 113 S. Lee Street sits on a relatively small urban lot, the kind common to the Alexandria Historic District. By 1933, the dwelling had been gutted, leaving no interior doors and extensive deterioration. Although the home subsequently underwent decades of rehabilitation, in 2010 owners began a second phase of restoration. Renovations restored the dwelling’s copper roof and removed paint from the exterior, which had eroded the mortar. Much of the work performed on the home’s interior replaced wooden features that had been salvaged and sold by a previous occupant."

Difficult to say what purpose it initially served. A merchant of some kind because it's not that far from the Potomac would be my uneducated guess. The wooden door is reminiscent of the wooden doors that were on cooled (usually by blocks of ice before refrigeration became common) storage rooms.
