Car Talk
Sorry but this is not Click & Clack - I miss them on radio.
I thought I'd start a thread for general car talk. The new and used car market is crazy these days. A neighbor lady just traded in her Ford F-150 on a new Ford Ranger. Her F-150 was an aluminum one, so it wasn't very old. She initially bought it to tow her boat to a cabin she had built in Canada and she hasn't been able to use it for the past year and half due to COVID. She thought the truck was too big for her daily driver. Her husband said when they bought the F-150 there was 40 to 50 F-150's on the lot. Today there was a grand total of six trucks - two were used and two were Rangers... The person test driving the white Ranger wanted the blue one she bought. Salesman said Ford has hundreds of assembled F-150s just waiting for chips.

I thought it was just the used market that is going nuts but looks like the new market is the same. I follow the classic/sports/exotic used market and prices just continue to climb. I'm seeing the trickle down effect as in people are buying the cars on the cheaper end of the scale which is now driving those prices up. The latest that I have noticed are the C-3 Corvettes (1968-1972) Rare versions always brought big money but now I'm seeing mid 70's C-3's starting to pull in some money. I think there are some smaller 4cyl. classic convertibles that still haven't skyrocketed such as the MGB, TR6, Fiat spider and certain years of Alfa Romeo. The question is, is it a bubble that is going to burst or will the market stay high for older vehicles.
Combine pent up demand with a major hiccup in the supply chain and you get nearly empty dealer lots. Like houses, this is a great time to sell a car, as long as you don't need to then buy a replacement.
A friend of my friend sells Toyotas. Weekend before last he sold a Rav4 Hybrid with a sticker that had Dealer Markup- $20,000. Don't know if it was new or used, I think new. He got a hell of a commission on it. Said the buyer would have paid another $5000 to get it.
A fool and his money are soon parted!
I will NEVER, EVER, EVER pay more for a car than MSRP.

I hope that person never has to sell that vehicle, depreciation will be really high if they do.
