Ouch. They could find more if they have to go that deep in the motor. I've never been a fan of VW. For decades they were always at the bottom of the quality ratings (Consumers Report, JD Power). They like most brands have gotten better. I tried to talk both my daughter and son-in-law from buying them but both did. Daughter has a 2016 Passat. SIL now has a Honda Pilot.

The next question I would have is - - how bad is the leak? You can buy one heck of a lot of oil for that much money. For example, could she get by with adding a quart of new oil every 300 miles?

This is the conversation Rick and I were just having. Two of the repair shops I spoke to indicated it could start leaking again. One could not do the job, the other could but would not warranty it. This may be a wait and see proposition IF we can impress upon someone how important it is to watch oil level!
