I was about 300 CDs into the 350CD job when I discovered a non-obvious set of preferences to specify the bit-rate (I guess) for iTunes to use in the loading & compression process. I'd been using the next-to-best level; if I'd only known, I would have used the best from the start. I got very grumpy.
But most Apple software is like this. It chooses for you to "simplify" things. At the same time, if you poke around enough, you can usually find options to make it do things the way you want it to. But it's a big pain.
This is why I made my previous suggestion, and I'm surprised that it didn't work.
