How about motorhomes, Bill? They only get about 4 miles to the gallon.

We have two small suvs, a jeep grand cherokee and a mountaineer. They both have v-8 engines and they both get about 15 to 17 mpg. We use the mountaineer as we would a pickup truck, but we do not like pickup trucks. We haul mulch, take our mowers in for repair in them, haul things, like dogs, etc. in them and I use mine for grocery store shopping, etc. I have an issue with those megasize suvs that all the soccer moms cruise around in all the time because they're so big and always seem to be parked by me when I leave anyplace I go, particularly if I'm in the S-car. I do not however think a ban is in order, but perhaps a voluntary movement to stop making them so stinking big.

Hey the secret is to ban airplanes. It take 186000 gallons of gas to fill up a 767.

At 3 bucks a gallon that's a lot of money. All those people could drive there for less. It might take more time and they'd have to bolster a local economy or two. THy might even have to carpool.

But if you made airfare what it truly cost and forgot those 19 billion free airfare miles they can never pay for, there would be a lot more fuel for land transportation

BAN AIRPLANES (sorry mike) and airplane subsidies of all kinds...Slow the world down... Think about it. Much easier to control flu epidemics, terrorists all that stuff.

It's isn't people anymore we need to move for commerce, it's freight. People can do it on the internet.

There's a lot of extra fuel...let them go the way of Pan Am.

Narberth is a tiny pocket of middleclassdom....surrounded by the most affluent township (Lower Merion) in Peeay. We rarely see Val's type of mid-sized SUV.....more like a CONTINUAL string of:

*Land Rover....and not the 2 smaller versions
*Porsche Cayenne.....and usually the Turbo model
*M*B M430 or 450 or 500....whatever the biggest engine size
*BMW X5.....and not the little X3 versions
*Escalades coming out of the woodwork

Of course, the "6-figure and up" owners don't give a crap about the $100 bill for a fill-up....

^^ Same here, PaS2k. The parking lot at the grocery where I shop is filled with BMWs, Cayennes, Landrovers, the Mercedes SUV (nice looking by the way) , and of course, those cute "little" hummer 3s. However, I very proudly park my humble little Mountaineer right beside them as close as I can and still get out of my door.

Oh yes we do.
$$ are $$
But what people drive is up to them. Isn't it?

The cost of fuel has determined the vehicle market before. It should do so again without any form of subsidy or intervention.

Subsidy or intervention just delays the inevitable in a depreciating supply economy. It also stifles private investment into alternative fuels.
