As a matter of fact, I think Ronstadt's version is the better one.
What about "That'll Be the Day"? Linda or Buddy Holly?

Much like the AP1 vs. AP2 debate huh?

Has to be Buddy Holly. That song was made for the rockabilly sound of Buddy Holly. Ronstadt's version doesn't work quite as well and sort of changes the character of the song.
How about "Different Drum"?

So I'm guessing you really are still on the fence about this raw (AP1) vs. more refined (AP2) as well?

Different Drum is one of my favorite Ronstadt songs. It was her first hit and as a matter of fact recorded by her when she was part of the Stone Poneys, a folk group. A little later they became Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys and before long she left to go on her own. I don't think I've ever heard it done by anyone else. Why do you mention it?
Ronstadt is one of my favorite singers. I've always loved her music and thought she had much more breadth than most. I was always amazed at the range of songs that she recorded. I can't think of many of her songs that I don't like. Also, it didn't hurt that she was beautiful when I was collecting her records.
That said, I still think Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day" is the better one.
No, I'm not on the fence about the AP1 vs AP2. I like my AP1.

You know, I'm not sure myself. Orbison was one of the great, distinct voices of our time. Nobody should have ever gotten away with covering "Crying" but both McLean (sp?) and K D Lang made it work. Personally, I lean towards K D Lang's version, but the other two are great recordings.
I have been a fan of K D Lang since her first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny. She has an amazing range (three octaves if I remember correctly).
