Default Detroit Auto Show 2010

This is the week the press gets their eye full and next week it opens to the public. Do you care? Things are definitely more positive than this time last year when there was more concern that auto mfg's CEO 'flew' to DC. OMG! How do think Nancy will come to Detroit this year (she has said she is coming)? Some have suggested by broom! Enough politics. Back to cars.

Honda is rolling out the production version of its two-seat 2011 CR-Z hybrid in Detroit. Doug (triple H) are you coming? You better, after drowling over your pc for that past two years. To quote AE, It is said to be quite leisurely in its performance. Let’s hope there’s more to it than the early reports have indicated.

Electric alley is the big deal this year. Really. Hybrids have been around for a decade now and only represent 3% of the total sales market. Electric cars will be much more expensive and come with all sorts of issues that hybrids don't have. Who do they think really wants these cars unless there is some huge reward to go that route?

If you plan to attend, or hear something cool, or just want to complain about the show. . . let's hear it.

Can American auto mfg'rs create buzz to bring new shoppers in?

In the past some displays cost $1.5M. We won't see those again - will we? Chrysler always did something BIG. Jeep waterfall, driving Jeep through the glass entrance door, cows bring the Ram truck down the street, etc. What will Fiat do?

Stay tuned......

There was a write up in the Houston Chronicle this morning about the show. They indicated it will be a chance for the Big Three to show us their green stuff -- and muscle cars galore!

Gasoline is again inching up towards $3.00+ in Texas.

Though Detroit is only a couple of hours away, I've never been there.

Funny, I'm watching a preview of the show on CNBC. They just featured the Tango: a tiny 2-person electric "car" that costs $150k. But it will go over 100 miles on a charge. Sergei Brin of Google supposedly bought one.

Crank without starting? Or have things changed since Fiat was last in the US market?

No surprises on the Honda - if you've been following it.

2010 DETROIT AUTO SHOW
Honda debuts production CR-Z hybrid
Jonathan Wong
Automotive News | January 12, 2010 - 12:33 pm EST

DETROIT -- Two concept versions and more than two years later, Honda's CR-Z was finally shown in production form at the Detroit auto show on Monday.

The sporty two-seater hybrid coupe retains the basic shape of the original concept first shown at the 2007 Tokyo auto show, but it features a shorter wheelbase and a longer front overhang to meet crash standards.

At the heart of the CR-Z is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology. The result is a combined peak output of 122 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque (123 lb-ft for continuously variable transmission models).

The CR-Z will be the first hybrid available with a six-speed manual, which is the standard transmission. A CVT with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters is optional. Preliminary fuel-economy estimates are 31/37 mpg city/highway for the manual and 36/38 mpg city/highway for CVT-equipped cars.

New to the hybrid system is a three-mode drive system that gives drivers the choice between Sport, Econ and Normal driving modes.

Sport sharpens engine throttle and steering response and the electric motor assist. Econ adjusts engine and electric-motor settings for optimal efficiency and reduces the air conditioning's load on the engine. Normal provides standard settings for steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning.

The interior features three-dimensional instruments with a blue color scheme. Depending on which drive mode is used, the inner ring of tachometer illuminates differently (red for Sport, transitions between blue and green for Econ and blue during Normal mode).

When the CR-Z goes on sale in late summer, it will be available in base and EX trims. Base models include stability control, a six-speaker audio system with USB connectivity, power windows, locks, remote keyless entry and cruise control. EX versions add xenon headlights, fog lights, a 360-watt premium sound system, Bluetooth, leather-wrapped steering wheel and center console with an armrest. Navigation is available on the EX.
