I had not heard of his stroke, so initially it was a shock for me but I too join those who admired him for doing it. Frankly I never identified with him after Bandstand because he never aged, like the rest of us! I quess he caught up. Matt, I think when guys get to their mid-to-late 70's the clocks ticking pretty darn fast for most - not all - but most. I also believe genes and attitude play a much bigger part than anything you can eat or do.

Didnt he miss it last year? I thought that was the big deal, and that is why he was back this year. All of his fans wanted him back.

Maybe I am thinking of something else??

IIRC he thought he was going to be well enough to do the New Years Eve show but he ended up not being able to do it and they had Regis do it in his place.
