I remember having only one television and one telephone in the house and a quarter buying a whole lot of candy and popcorn at the movie.

I remember when that one telephone was a party line, and you had to listen to see if it was in use before dialing - try explaining THAT to today's teenagers!

I hate to date myself, but I remember that too. The other party on our "party line" lived just a few houses away.

Imagine a house of 5 young ladies dealing with a party line today!

Depending on the area of the country, party lines were still around even into the 80's. In my previous life, I lived in the mountains west of Colorado Springs and for the first year or two, we had no phone service. When we did get phone service, we were on a party line for about 5 years before we had normal (private) lines. With party lines - no answering machines - no dialup connections.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the party lines and yet I remember there wasn't much of a problem with people falling out about them. Courtesy ruled the day. I do remember having to have a strong index finger to dial all those numbers until we discovered a pencil worked just as well.

My sis had a little cottage/camp in the mountains of NH. The local store had a pay phone that had no dial. You reached an operator when you picked up the phone. This was not that long ago. Less than 15 years, for sure.

I think my four sisters and I might not have followed the courtesy rule from time to time with our party line.
