Imagine no area codes. Those operators earned their keep back then for sure. Anybody remember the test screen? And what time did programming go off in your area? Watching until 10pm was considred late night television and that's if you were lucky. Programming didn't start until late afternoon or evening either if I recall. We'd watch the test screen just like we "watched" the radio. I also remember only 2 or 3 channels.
I think in New York City the independent stations signed off at midnight and the network stations signed off at 2:00 AM. On Sunday night I think they all signed off at midnight.

Do you remember the "Late Show" on CBS. Do you remember that they used the "Syncopated Clock" as it's theme song?

Yep Colo, that was definitely one of them. I can still see the RCA Victor cabinet that held it. Was that really 50 some odd years ago?

That was a test pattern. Viewers used it to adjust the horizontal and vertical picture settings. It came on right after the star spangled banner played at signoff.

Patty, that was what was on the screen when there was no programs on. It either had a loud continuous bleep or music played. You turned on the TV and waited for the shows to start or you watched the adults fall asleep with this showing after all programs went off. Don't know who or why they came up with this paticular pattern if that's what you mean, maybe the guys can elaborate. The test screen proved that your TV was working properly.

And then there was that "Please don't adjust your set" message.

Do you remember what the RCA dog's name was, and what the motto was?
