Default Driving to FLORIDA....

OK, next Sunday Feb 10 we are DRIVING from Philly area to the gulf coast of FL...taking almost a week to get there...visiting friends along the way in VA, NC and SC. Wanted to visit Valentine, but they're too far off the route this time. We'll stay for a week near Sanibel Island; then Kathy will fly back from TPA and I'll drive "quick like a bunny (or TX Jim )" back north. Here is my quandary:

Should I drive the S2000 which gets about 25mpg average on the hiway, or the Prius which gets about 50 mpg?

The trip will be AT LEAST 2,500 miles roundtrip.

Just for the sake of argument, let's say S2000 gas is 4.00/gallon

S2000: 2,500 / 25 = 100 x 4 = 400.

Prius: 2,500 / 50 = 50 x 4 = 200.

Safety is a heck of a lot more important than gas mileage. Have you looked a storm map lately? It's winter Bunky.

I too am driving to FL, sometime next week. True, I am leaving from the mid-west and probably will encounter more hills than you - i.e., Renfro Valley, Jellico Mountains, etc. but I don't need a poll to tell me what to drive...... it will be my Quattro.

Even though the ground hog is calling for an early spring I think a safer bet this time of year is the Toyota. However the further south you get the more you're going to wish you had the S.

Which one is the most comfortable for the driver AND passenger?

Sounds like you will be spending a number of hours in the car... take the one that is most comfortable....

That being said.... I'd take the Prius due to the chance of snow along part of your route!

You have a choice. You can drive a spirited sports car with a convertible top or you can drive your Prius.

I guess this is one of those monumental decisions in your life .

It begs the question "Who am I?"

It will be an interesting choice. Chances are it will be resolved with this question.

"Honey, what are we driving to Florida?"

Weather could be a factor, comfort could be a factor, but I don't think a couple hundred extra for gas should even be a factor. Don't be so frugal. You can't take it with you.

I'm surprised you totally ignored the obvious choice; The dodge dart.
You are, after all, going to floriduh.
You could drive aimlessly and you'd blend right in with all of the other lost and confused souls.

I drive to Naples, Fla. every year for 6 weeks. We leave this year on 2/18. I drive our BMW X3 which is very comfortable and roomy. My other vehicle is a Jeep which is out of the question with big tires, ride and noise levels. But, when I owned my S2000 I took our Lexus. It is a long drive and our backs and butts would be screaming not to mention the safety issue. People drive like maniacs on 95. Hard to get golf clubs, bike and luggage in the trunk of the Honda. Do yourself and your body parts a favor and take the Prius. Have fun, watch out for the Q-tips. We will be visiting friends in Sanibel as well.

Well, I guess you didn't bother to buy the car you need for this trip. Now you have to make a choice from two poor options. Logic dictates that you take the Prius. I highly recommend that you turn off the economy screen and use the hours of drive time to reflect on your life choices.
