I have my normal finches, or whatever, and scrub jays and blue jays, when I'm lucky enough to time it right. But, in So Cal, Ricky sent me a couple of his (crappy) cell phone photos, today. This happens every so often there. The Kestrels (I think) come swooping down to catch a small bird on the patio and then fly into the glass wall. He said it eventually flew away. I have two dead ones there on my watch.

We have all the usual birds, winter or summer, every day. Of course they get fresh food and water every day, no matter the temperature, so that might have something to do with it. Plus we cater 365 days a year.

Rick saw a few of our usual visitors yesterday, but activity is still limited. I will have to get the heated bird bath next year. That should draw them in.

Patty it helps to hang old cds up. They catch the sun and spin in the wind, that would be a warning for the kestrels. I hate to see any bird harmed. I've had the horror of twice seeing a red tailed hawk killed on the highway by a car when they have dived for road kill.

I wonder if the birds in our neighborhood know how lucky they are - wind chill is 12 below and the bird lover I live with is out filling the five feeders.... just another day at our house.

My lady bird feeder say they do thank you but you have to listen. She swears the chickadee's thank her. What I know. We both laughed at your comment!

That's neat. We have never had one that close to our house.
