FIOS
I had Verizon install FIOS today, and the first reviews are quite spectacular.
TV-Picture quality is just plain great. HD is the same from station to station, SD is significantly better than Comcast and as good if not better than Dish. The only downside is that the whole house DVR does not work with HD set-top boxes as the sales guy had claimed.
Telephone-No difference that I can detect. The change over was flawless and there is a bettery backup, incase of power failure. Voice mail worked exactly the same and the outgoing message didn't need to be redone.
(Jim, they did not take down the copper and only disconnected it inside the house.)
Internet-Blazing, it truly is 20 down, 5 up.
They installed their own router. They simply unplugged my computers, printer and server from the old router and plugged them into the new router and everything worked, even my internal server network.

Sounds like just the thing for a game'r. Myself, for now anyways, I'm really please with Comcast (I have their tv, phone, internet package).

I wish we could get FIOS here. It will probably be a decade before FIOS gets out here in the boondocks. In the meantime, we have Comcast which I hate so much that I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV. I don't know that I'll like them much better, but at least XM Radio is included in the package.
I had been a customer of Comcast and its predecessors for almost 30 years. I had grown quite tired of the having to wait a week to get a replacement HD box, the constant raising of rates, and spotty support. (Every year when I passed the anniversary date, my bill would go up. I'd have to call and "renegotiate" my bill down $40-50.)
Dean, I had Dish and liked it overall, but could not get local channels at the time. My neighbor currently has Direct and really likes it...compared to Comcast. The XM adder is really quite nice.
Lainey, they are building out at an incredible speed, keep your fingers crossed.

Zip, I'm not sure on this but I heard with FIOS there are no free movies like Comcast has with On Demand. Also, Comcast announced that they will be offering "thousands" of movies On Demand instead of the hundreds they offer now. Could put a hit on the mail order movie business.

We are still in the "dark ages" when it comes to TV watching. Regular extended cable. No DVR, though we do have a DVD player and still use our VCR!
We don't even have a cable box or any premium channels. I really HATE spending the kind of money we are already spending just to watch cable TV, since I don't care all that much about TV. We get our movies from Net Flix.
I already have Verizon DSL for my internet and Verizon for my phone. I'd rather "bundle" the package with them, then give the cable company any more business. Which reminds me, I too should probably call the cable company and threaten to cancel and see if they will negotiate my rate.

Overall the On-Demand goes to Comcast, but again not as big an issue as picture quality to me.

VZ finished the installation upgrade out in our street and a day or two later the barrage of snail mail "special offers" hit the mailbox! I expect that there will be a lot of competition betw VZ and Cst over the next year....I'll keep an eye on it....
We're like Lainey....pretty low tech/ still watch VCR/ no HD telly (yet). We have the extended basic TV and cable modem for Internet....it's about 58 bucks per month. I THINK that there's a set fee schedule negotiated with local municipality in Peeay.....not sure whether I can call up and negotiate
Our VZ wireless (3 on family plan) and local landline add up to another ~100 bucks per month. Altogether, about 2k per year for nothing but

I still use my VCR to record games.
