Default Garmin Nuvi GPS updated maps

I just checked the Garmin site and found out that the 2008 maps are now available for my Garmin Nuvi 660. (Map Update 2008 City Navigator North America NT-$69.99).

I called Garmin on the phone and verified that this version is what I need, so I ordered the CD over the phone. The update disks are back ordered and would be sent out in 2-3 weeks.

Matt bought ours at Best Buy over the weekend. We had some gift cards and he didn't want to wait.

They have one for the Nuvi 350 as well. We're going to pass on this one and get the next. I don't think we need every upgrade.....maybe we'll find out otherwise.

They are charging for this update? That must be why I have not received an e-mail from them. Interesting.

They always charge, and from what I've heard average price is around $70.00. The exception seems to be if you buy a model late in the year, if an update is available shortly afterwards, they may give you that one for free or at a reduced price.

I'm guessing we'll update every other year, which is actually what was suggested to me by someone at Garmin.

Up in the NE if you live in a very established area not much changes as every thing is already built out. Of course the database of restaurants and other points of interest may change. This is the first map upgrade that we have done in the two and a half years that we have had our C330.

If you go to website below one can plug in the serial number and see which upgrades are available for your unit.

Valentine had sent me a message a few weeks ago when she was notified about this upgrade. It took Garmin a couple of weeks before I received an e-mail from them. I am assuming that they have a huge e-mail data base to work through.

P.S. I did the upgrade via my IBM ThinkPad and it did take about an hour and twenty minutes. When you first fire up the DVD it warns one that it could take up to two hours.

I've gotten several upgrades that were gratis, but the big map upgrades cost about $70 and I've bought them a couple of times. No regrets.

Update: got an email from Garmin this morning saying my map ugrade cd has been shipped. The upgrades are really good to get imho because the maps include new highways built, ramp changes, etc. It makes traveling easier and faster.

Val,

When did you order the maps? The Garmin saleswoman told me it would be a 2-3 weeks wait.
