Default The Grammys

Being pretty much out of the popular music scene since the early 90s, I thought I'd do myself a favor and tune into the Grammys last night to try and get a sense of who the current popular performers are. I saw performances of songs by the Beatles. I saw Ella Fitzgerald perform gospel. Tina Turner performed Proud Mary with Beyounce who used to be in some girl group back in the 90s. The Eagles won an award as did Hebie Hancock. John Paul Jones of Led Zeplin fame helped out the Foo Fighters in a live performance. Tony Bennett gave out awards along with Cindi Lauper. Some older woman sang a Frank Sinatra duet with Kid Rock. Andy Williams announced a life time acheivement award and I saw video of Cab Calloway.

Leaving aside rap, I conclude that today's popular music is made up of performers from the 40s, 50s 60s and 70s, and the band Foo Fighters that my son was listening to about 6 or 7 years ago. Oh, and some english girl named Amy Winehouse.

Damn, sorry I missed the foo fighters, I actually know and like some of their music I was mad I did not get to watch Cold Case I try to listen to some of the new rock stations on a regular basis. Some of it's good stuff. I do find myself listening more to 80's and 90's though.

I avoid all of the 'Hand me another trophy' shows. As if the fame and fortune isn't enough.

I swear if I was watching a Grammys show from 1975 I would have seen 2/3 of the people I saw last night.

^^ Do you suppose that's because the producers were trying to snare folks our age into watching, or because there just aren't any new "stars" of that magnitude? HPH

That was Keely Smith, a jazz singer from long ago. I felt bad for her tho. She seemed out of her element, and let's face it, her voice isn't nearly what it was in her prime.

I have to say, I have no idea. Maybe the writer's strike had something to do with it. I thought it was pretty sad. Beleive it or not, I turned to a local PBS station that was playing a Barry Manilow concert and found that to be a higher quality presentation. And I don't much care for Barry.

I'd rather drive pencils in to my ears than watch or listen to Barry Manilow. But, hey, that's just me.
