Elaine was running out too, but a neighbor has given her some. It is in the garage now under quarantine until she needs it.

Hi Levi,

When Elaine ran out of elastic she started to make tie ups (using cloth for string) If Karla wants to know what she did let me know.

Donna picked up the pattern but of course the store had no elastic.

Several people here in town are making masks. We don't have a proper sewing machine or some of the other very basic sewing basket items but we do have quite a few spools of thread from years gone by. So we donated those to a woman who is making the masks but who has run out.

Not sure if this is a practical thing or not, but I have heard it suggested that you can remove the elastic from old fitted bed sheets that have been stuck at the bottom of the linen closet for years.

Our daughter has made "continuous tee shirt yarn" from old tee shirts to use as ties in drawstring bags that she has made.

Not sure if this would work for the masks instead of elastic.

How to make T-Shirt Yarn using the Whole Shirt in a Continuous Strand:

I think this is a good tutorial video.

see my post above, Elaine made tie up ones by making the cord from fabric.

here is what she did:

If you’re making masks and run out of elastic, make a string using a 2” x 35” piece of fabric. Fold / press edges toward the center and stitch closed. Attach along the upper and lower edges of the mask.
The benefit of this option is that it fits many people. (Time consuming though)

Actually, even one layer helps already, it won't save you from the virus as it's way too small, but still - it protects you from liquids in the air. The more layers it has - the better, from what I found.
If you don't have a sewing machine or other sewing items, try this: https://blog.japanesecreations.com/n...f-and-hair-tie
You can also remove elastic from socks, that's mentioned in this tutorial as well.

As it's still face covering, it should be helpful. Once again, just be sure there are multiple layers, that's what CDC recommends https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...coverings.html

Stay safe everyone.

I did not read the whole thread but I like the tip to sew a coffee filter into the do-it-yourself mask from Mathew MacConaee (sp? The Lincoln Guy)
