Default HEY RC RYDER

I picked BB up at the vet's on Monday morning and her teeth are bright and shiny. One question though. I signed a form giving permission for them to give her any vaccines, meds, etc. that she may need. They gave her a vaccine (Porphyromonas Bacterin Series) to prevent periodonitis and administered oral antibiotics. Why did my dentist not do all that for me when I had my teeth cleaned? Hmmmm?

Val: I don't know one thing about that vaccine. Since it is a bacterin, which means it is a chemically killed whole bacteria vaccine, it also tends to say minimal effectiveness, specific but not necessarily sensitive, and of short duration (typically only a few months). If the dog is old and perhaps had some chronic mitral valve and kidney insufficiencies (most all old dogs past 8-9 years have these) and I spent a lot of time digging under the gum line or the gums are receeded, I might give some short term antibiotics.
I don't know if this or any other similar vaccines are used in human dentistry. My +1 was a dental assistant, and she says that people scheduled for peridontal procedures and/or even deep scalings/cleanings are typically pre and post medicated with loading doses of antibiotics IF they have mitral prolapses or had valve replacements - to prevent pericarditis. Same is true for patients who have had any prosthetic replacements, like hisps, knees, etc If you don't need it, you don't get it.
So, BB must have done fine. Super. I suppose you had your makeup rearranged?
