Thumbs down Highly Recommended Performance Winter Tires

After using Bridgestone Blizzaks on my Acura TL for years, I purchased a set of four Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 tires from The Tire Rack last year.

Wow! They are just as good as my old Blizzaks were in the snow and they are far superior in wet and dry conditions.

Here are the tirerack.com online survey results for the 'Performance Winter' tire category:

BTW, I just had the M3s reinstalled this morning on the TL in anticipation of the big snow storm forecast to hit the Northeast tonight and tomorrow!

I'm on my second pair of Dunlop Sport 5000s. I like them. They are designed for rain and up to an inch of snow.

I'm a big fan of Blizzak WS-50s (not LM-22s) for winter driving, but good to hear about other options!

Either R&T or C/D had a huge winter tire test in a recent edition. Can't remember which month. I'm pretty sure the Dunlops were tested.

I've heard amazing things about the M3s from everyone I know who has used them. If the time comes that I need to buy winter tires, they top the list.

For heavy duty ice/snow driving with no consideration for dry performance, check out the Nokian/Hakkapeliita 1's.

Brent mentioned Nokian Hakkas; let me put in a plug for Nokian WRs if you're not in full winter all the time. They're "4 season" tires but winter rated (i.e., probably the most aggressive all seasons out there). I had them on my STi last winter in New Mexico, and I liked them better than the Dunlop M2s I'd used on previous cars. But this was on a mix of road conditions, not all snowy. If they're made in the sizes for the S, they'd be a good performance winter tire for it. (TireRack, unfortunately, doesn't carry Nokians.) HPH

If you look at The Tire Rack Performance Winter Tire Survey Results via the link provided at top, you will see that the M2s are down on the list.

I am not endorsing the M2s here -- I am endorsing the Dunlop M3s!

I'll second that endorsement. I intalled mine last Sunday and tried them out this week with our recent snow. They make the S as close to a winter car as I think you can do.
