You should never be trying to distract yourself while using weights - this results in a lack of intensity, which results in a workout of only minimal benefit. Not to mention the danger of falling out of good form and hurting yourself. Staying focused will result in greater and faster gains.

As for cardio workouts, I prefer High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), because 20 minutes of hard work beats an hour of drudgery anytime. I used to watch a recorded episode of something during the cardio, but found that I get better results by keeping it to 20 minutes, and working hard all of that time.

what do you ladies do to distract yourself while using those exercise balls, and weights, and the like? Blast music, watch TV?

I find that kind of exercise sooooooooo boring. I only get through the treadmill if I have music in my ears.
I have total peace and quiet while doing my exercise capsule. Play the iPod on earphones at the gym when I do the elliptical, or use the earphones to listen to the TV via the elliptical connection, if there's something on I can stomach. When I do my weights machine at home, I play the iPod with a drop in speaker.

It is boring. New music always helps.

I could not exercise indoors without distraction. It's hard enough, for me, to get on a boring treadmill, without music it won't happen. TV is not a good enough distraction for me, though that is what Rick prefers.

Outside walking, by myself I take my cell phone and a walkman...I guess I don't like peace and quiet.

I have tried running (jogging) on the tread mills but I find doing it inside is just to boring. Have tried watching TV or listening to the IPod but it just does not work.

My current schedule is getting up at 4 AM 3 times a week and jogginng 4 miles. It takes me to mile 2 to realize I am actually out running. My Lab is my running partner and goes with me on all the runs. When the alarm goes off he is in my face to get my butt out of bed.

Great time of the year down here. Mornings are in the high 40s or low 50s. Dressing in shorts and a long sleeve tee makes it perfect.

Kathy is a big walker (couple miles per day) and I swim for 1/2 hour almost every day at the local Y. Kathy also works out on the machines at the Y a few times per week. We have an ancient original low tech Nordic Trak, and Kathy uses it on days when rain/ snow preclude her walking regimen

Thus, I voted for "One of us uses it....."

I forgot to ask, Do Thera-Bands count as home exercise equipment? If so, I've got a bunch.

Me too. I haven't done any exercises in a few days and I need to get motivated again.
