WOW!!!! Beautiful pictures. I have a few photos that I took, but I've never loaded them onto this site. I perched for quite some time on a ladder to get them. I'll have to find them and load them up. Aren't we the nerds????? But don't we love it!!!

Those are Black chin Hummingbirds, they are very common in the South East.
We have a feeder in front of our kitchen window, i have seen as many as 15 at one time.
Those are actually ruby throats. They are very similar in appearance to the black chin, but we're a little too far north and east of the black chin's range.

The male with the bright red throat often perches by that feeder when the other birds are actively feeding. He's not big on sharing.

What species is that in DrT's photos? I've never seen one.

Spectacular photos!! I love hummingbirds. Unfortunately, there aren't too many around my condo building. The ones I have seen, though, are pretty feisty when it comes to feeding.

I thought the Ruby Throat was the only hummingbird east of the Mississippi?

We get them in our back yard from time to time...they like our Rose of Sharon hedge.

Great shots!

Ruby Throats are the only hummingbirds we have here in Virginia. They come here to nest and then fly south for the winter. They LOVE butterfly bushes too and hover for long periods of time sipping nectar from every tiny little flower.

I love hummingbirds. Beautiful pics Raymo and Doc T, and neat link, Patty.

We have a couple of feeders in our yard for them. They also frequent the various flowers Rick plants.

I've seen three in the yard at one time, and they don't like to share at all.

Never have been able to capture any pics though.

Dr. T,

Did you really take those? If so, was it through a window? Did you use a telephoto?

I just refilled my seed bird feeder and was being buzzed by a hummingbird. I have three hummer feeders at my house.

Patty,
I took the top pic in La Jolla this last Sept., I was standing about 8' away from the flowers and the bird pretty much ignored me....the other I took through a window at my parents house....they have lots of feeders. I was using a Canon 20D with a 70-200 f/2.8L lens.

Hummingbirds do have feet, and they can and do perch.

They usually can't do much else with their feet, though. Walking or running is pretty much out of the question.
Once again, my penchant toward subtlety and lack of attention to smilie detail bites me in the butt.
