The couple of hummingbird moths we've seen are not as large as a hummingbird, but they sure fool you at first.
That's known as mimesis. The moth mimics a hummingbird and avoids predation by (insectivorous) birds.

It was overcast this morning and the birds were active though skittish. I managed to get a few pictures:

They'll probably hang around until the end of the month and that'll be it until next year.

Nice pics!

We've still seen our hummingbirds around, but don't expect they'll be here much longer.

Haven't seen the ruby throated one in a while.

They packed up and left. Haven't seen a hummer in more than a week. Time to take the feeders down.

Mine are thinning out. I still have them but not 8 at a time. Just one or two, I think. I just refilled the feeders after being gone for 6 days, and it's been close to 100* lately, so maybe they are sitting in the trees waiting for it to cool off.

Thanks for posting the video, zzziippyyy. I wanted to see how the hummingbird with the "bent" bill/beak would feed.

Patty and I have observed how aggressive those little birds can be. They use their long, sharp beaks like daggers to fend off others. We've found some with serious wounds to their heads inflicted by other hummers while being bullied at the feeders. I love watching them...like little fighter jets zooming around.
