We have an HVAC expert here now. He discovered we had a melted relay in the upstairs unit and is now doing a check to be sure it will work properly and our issues should be resolved. YAY.
Any idea why the relay melted? That doesn't sound normal.

I would make certain to find the cause and get it repaired.

Hi Val, good luck getting all the stuff working right. SOunds like you need a service call.

I don't know squat about heat pumps, but does your system involved circulating water? Is it a closed system? I just learned how to bleed my hot-water baseboard system this year and that dealt with some inefficiencies (non-working heat baseboard radiators).

Best wishes.

The repairman said it happens from time to time -- I said (logically I think) why? He said because they just plain wear out, overheat and die. After he replaced the relay he tested the system and went through all three of the systems and did a check and everything tested fine. That stupid talking thermostat that I have downstairs is the only one that reads a couple/degrees off but the resident engineer here does not want to replace it yet. I do not like it since it constantly tells me that what I want to do is not appropriate. Perhaps I do not know how to properly set the thing. The house has been very comfy all day and all the rooms upstairs and down are the same temp.

I am very happy with the propane fireplace and it does a fine job of looking lovely and providing an extra heat source should we need it.

Down here in SC heatpumps are the norm and cooling is far more important than heating. Temps rarely drop low enough that any major heating is needed. All of our heat/cooling is run through the ceilings and the ductwork is all flex. Back in Virginia all the vents were in the baseboards and the ductwork was metal, but we needed major heat there.
