I started out on oxycodone and was switched to hydrocodone 5mg, last week. I was taking two hydrocodones at night at sometimes one during the day and hurting too much all the time. It's not as strong as the oxycodone. I called the surgeon's PA today and told her the situation and the surgeon wants me to start taking two hydrocodones every four hours with 800 mg ibuprofen every six, for three days to get the pain down. I'm going to aim for every five hours. It's better after two doses, today. I expect some pain but it really takes a toll when it's non stop and makes it hard to sleep. I'm sure you know all about it.

Ah my confusion, your on hydrocodone, I was thinking of Hydromorphone. i.e. dilaudid.
5 mg of dilaudid knocks me on my ass. After two the nurse came in and woke me up to make sure i would continue breathing. I save it for kidney stones.

Yeah, I know that's a common drug for patients in recovery after surgery. I used to hear the nurses talking about giving someone that in the recovery room when I was volunteering. I don't know that they give it to you to take home ever.

Some joint replacement patients get the really strong stuff to take home. My former employer did. Have to be real careful with it.

Glad things are coming around for you, Patty. You just have to give it time and a good amount of PT. One year and three months post surgery and Barbara still improves slowly from her hip replacement. Full recovery was supposed to take three months when she was conferring with doctors pre-surgery. Post surgery, they all admitted it takes a year or more. Please keep us posted.
