Default Just built my new computer

How does this sound:

3.2Meg Dual Core Intel chip, 64 bit (of course)
2 Gig RAM
800Mhz Front Side Bus
dual 250Gig Western Digital Hard drives, running RAID setup
dual DVD read/write
250Gig external Western Digital auto backup Hard Drive
a graphics card that would make your teenager giddy
11 in one card reader (SD, MMC, etc.)
Dual 19" Acer flat screen monitors
wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard

and just for fun, a TV card that hooks into my cable so I can watch TV in the corner of one monitor while I work

Yep, Christmas came early this year...

Cordy,

That's a nice system! Is this just for home use, or are you running an office on this? 500GB can store a serious amount of pix, video, etc...

Are you running Windows? x64 edition?

Nice. I've just helped set up a local school with 20 similar machines, each with 2G RAM, dual processor Athlon64, dual graphics cards, and 4x 500G hardrives (2terabytes disk store each), along with the obligatory 19 LCD screen.

Wonderful for playing Quake4 on

The school just want to use them for teaching video production, so have also added 8 linux machines running Maya for a small render farm as well.

I wish I'd gone to a school like that when I was young, but as my kids tell me, they hadn't even invented fire back then, let alone computers

Why not an Athlon?

Which motherboard? I haven't kept up for several months - what's the hot chipset these days?

So now it's time for us to bust out our "computer penis'" ?

Anyway nice system! Are you editing video, or just playing games....

No Windows 64 yet--WAY too buggy. I'll check on the board--forgot the name. I got the Intel instead of Athlon, even though the AMD has a 1Gig FSB, because they have a tendency to run slightly hotter than the Intel. I've got a computer enclosure that doesn't allow as much airflow as it should.

This is mainly a work computer--no games. However, I just got a Hi-Def camcorder, so the mega hard drive space will come in handy.

I built my current setup a year ago, running 3.0 P4, 1 Gig RAM, Gigabyte MB, Ati card (can't remember which one). I have a Western Digital Raptor system HD (35 gb @ 10K rpm), a SCSI 75 meg for working video files, and a 300 gb for storage. My motherboard supports RAID, but it was pretty new then, and the drivers weren't signed and I was/am a little paranoid about data loss.

I know what you mean about heat! I have the large Antec case with 4 fans (not counting the fans on the cards and in the power supply). Our two CPUs sit under the desk next to my right leg. The design of the desk does not allow too much airflow and the heat just builds up. I've even thought of cutting a hole and adding a small box fan to exhaust some hot air. But when they're running it sounds like we're on a plane!

I built this to be a dual work/video editing so I can learn how to do some basic video stuff. I'm using Vegas 4 for now and it suits my needs. I'm curious about your new HD camcorder? What did you get? How long does it record on the tape (still mini dv?)? That must take up a TON of space on the computer!

I think I am going to buy an Apple IMAC next time. I want to turn to the dark side. By the way, nice set up!

I haven't really been keeping up, but this setup (particularly with the 64-bit chips) sounds like state of the art.

For years, I did the same thing (built systems at the state of the art), and finally gave up when I found that my budget couldn't keep up with new advances. But this was when advances (in all areas, processers, graphics, storage, display) were coming fast and furious. It's my impression that things have slowed down somewhat now. Is that a fair impression?

Also, for a system at home, I found the cooling needs of these top systems required so many fans (not to mention big power backup demands) that they were hugely noisy. Has that improved?

In any case, now you can crunch those bits. HPH

Some of my parts just shipped for my new desktop.Running 2 dual core Xeons with 8GB (still have 4 open slots) 256MB Caching controller with 4 300GB SCSI Drives in a RAID10 config. Still waffling on the video but I ave dual 24" Dell LCD's waitning to be hooked up.

Not had a problem with XP64 on my old Atlon 64 since I got drivers for my printer.
