You seem to have had your share. I was wondering why people hang out to people that are in all practicality dead. I think it has a lot to do with guilty consience.

I'll add to the thought... I think that if someone dies doing something he/she enjoys, that's a good death.

There is no question in my mind what I want for myself - not to linger no matter what. I'm glad people here mentioned living wills and medical powers of attorney. Absolutely necessary!! The one thing we don't want is a stranger making a decision for us when we can't for ourselves.

I'm responsible for my 95-yr-old aunt and have legal and medical powers of attorney for her and my parents. Also, a Do Not Resuscitate order is posted on my aunt's wall at her assisted living facility.

And don't forget a Revocable Trust instead of a will to avoid probate and major headaches for your executor and heirs.

Yes, some people have drawn up trusts and forgotten to transfer the assets into them!! Everything has to be put in the name of the trust.

^^ We get this every so often with probate estates we didn't do the original planning on before the trustmaker passed. Normally it just means jumping through probate to get the assets into the trust for distribution, but it can lead to nasty problems that could have easily been avoided.

Why is everyone so quick to die? Have you documented SPECIFICALLY where you want to draw the line? What if you had a stroke, couldn't eat and had to be fed via a feeding tube. And you couldn't speak or walk. But you had 100% of your mental capacity? What would you do? I suspect some would want to live in this scenario and others would not. If you fill out your standard living will you would be plugged. It's a complicated scenario and not as black and white as some of those living will forms. Perhaps you would want some time to see how your new "life" was.
